…because it made it so clear he wasn’t including himself as a Winchester. The way he smiled made the angles and wrinkles of his face more angular and sinister. The way he delivered the line was like he knew from personal experience what a dead Winchester is made of. What he is capable of.
I believe I know why Sam had visions of Hell after praying for help and a sign, and exactly what is going on here. Because Lucifer the Lightbringer is the opposite of Amara the Darkness. And in this scene, particularly in this moment, Matt Cohen was playing Lucifer.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
And maybe the light was Lucifer, the first angel, the Lightbringer. And Lucifer the Lightbringer pushed back the Darkness. And God knows this, knows he needs Lucifer to lock away the Darkness, and that Sam was Lucifer’s chosen vessel, so he needs Sam to let Lucifer in so he can lock the Darkness away again. And Dean, with his supposed bond with Amara, will bring the Darkness within reach of Sam, so this can happen. And their love for each other will keep Sam from letting Lucifer have his vessel permanently, or Dean letting the Darkness escape.
